My School cash coup for Humpty Doo
A TERRITORY school has been singled out for special treatment by the NT and federal governments.
Humpty Doo Primary, on the outskirts of Darwin, will receive extra money for literacy and numeracy classes.
NT Education Minister Chris Burns said the school was chosen for an unspecified cash injection after the publication of national benchmark results on the My School website.
Humpty Doo performed only about 60 per cent as well as the top Territory school, Essington, in Year 3 and 70 per cent in Year 5.
But many of the school’s 380 students speak English as a second language.
More than 100 struggling Territory schools are to benefit from a wider campaign to improve literacy and numeracy.
Dr Burns said the spending – combined with the “greater transparency” offered by the My School website and a new national curriculum – would see an “education revolution” in the NT.
The Smarter Schools partnership will:
SET up “centres of excellence” at the best performing remote schools to act as hubs for teachers;
PROVIDE virtual schooling services to give senior secondary and vocational students online access to specialised courses;
PILOT new ways to support principals in getting parents, students and the local community involved with the school; and
IMPROVE ways to attract and retain “quality graduates” to remote schools.
