Obama Boosts Science and Maths Spending

President Barack Obama this week proposed $80 million in new government funding for a program to boost science and maths education in U.S. schools.

It seems the US is facing the same pressures to raise the numbers of students studying these two critically important subjects.

The announcement by Barack Obama includes funding to train 100,000 new teachers who would help to “meet an ambitious goal, which is 1 million more American graduates in science, technology, engineering, and math over the next 10 years.”

In addition the president said philanthropic organisations and private companies have committed to providing $22 million USD to help train new maths and science teachers.

Maybe this could be an option taken up in Australia where private organisations and business sponsor students while progressing through their normal schooling.

The lack of investment in the teaching of Maths and Sciences over the last 20 years and the lack of student interest are now coming home to roost.
