Salary ‘boost’ to help teachers go bush

GRADUATE teachers could get extra pay for every year they work in hard-to-staff areas in rural or remote schools as part of a federal push to target disadvantaged schools.
The scheme would result in eligible graduate teachers getting financial rewards for teaching in ”priority” schools for up to four years, and and would be funded through a national partnership signed last year between the Victoria and the federal government.

TRAINEE teachers who fail their teaching rounds in schools are being allowed to graduate and take charge of classrooms, according to the Victorian Principals Association.
Primary school principals have accused universities responsible for teacher training of ignoring their advice that some trainee teachers are unfit to graduate.
University students studying to become school teachers must complete part of their coursework in teaching rounds at schools to gain practical experience and put theory into practice.
School challenges tribunal decision on fees dispute

A SUPREME Court judge will rule on an appeal by a South Yarra grammar school against a tribunal’s decision its headmistress fears will have major ramifications for every independent school’s fee arrangements.
Christ Church Grammar School is challenging a finding that the parents who announced the withdrawal of their son are not liable to pay $3268 in fees in lieu of a full term’s notice in writing.
The parents told the primary school in October 2008 their son would not return in 2009. This was nine days into term 4 and hence a breach of the terms and conditions they had signed.
Male teacher drop violence link

A DECLINE in the number of male teachers is being blamed for rising youth violence.
Just 28 per cent of state schoolteachers are men, down from 32 per cent 10 years ago.
Youth crime has soared in that time. Sex attacks, robberies, assaults and weapon offences have increased significantly, and psychologists and family groups told the Herald Sun the loss of male role models was an important factor.

A FORMER Melbourne schoolteacher tied and gagged young boys then took photos of them, all for his sexual gratification, a court heard.
George Iliakis, 36, became a teacher after discovering he had an interest in young boys while working on a summer camp in the United States, the County Court heard.
He was found with more than 16,000 child porn and child abuse images on his computer including more than 650 he took himself.

PRIMARY school students are being forced to hand in their mobile phones before class amid rising concern over disruptive calls and texts during school.
While Education Department guidelines allow students to carry switched-off mobiles in class, some schools don’t want a bar of them.
Meadowglen Primary principal Loretta Piazza said her students were required to check in their mobiles on arrival at the Epping school.

STATE school principals want the Brumby Government to make it easier for them to get rid of slack and dodgy teachers.
Principals say it can take up to 18 months to sack underperforming and misbehaving staff because of red tape.
Victorian Association of State Secondary Principals president Brian Burgess said yesterday that the time it took to deal with teachers facing serious issues was bad for school morale.
Fire destroys Toolamba Primary School overnight

A SMALL country primary school was gutted by fire this morning.
Country Fire Authority crews were called to the Toolamba Primary School, approximately 18km south of Shepparton, at about 4am.
CFA officer Steve Smith said the Wren St building was well alight when the crews arrived.
Collapsed college owes students $10m

THE collapsed GEOS English language college network was permanently shut yesterday after administrators discovered the Japanese owners had left it with no money to keep going.
Students and staff are owed more than $10 million in pre-paid fees and entitlements.
Worst-hit are about 1000 students who had paid GEOS for homestay accommodation and who could now face eviction.
Hoon driver risked slives of students in Melbourne

POLICE have slammed the action of two hoon drivers outside a Melbourne school after one lost control of his car and narrowly missed a group of students on their lunch break.
Two former students entered Isik College’s Dandenong campus in Chapel Road, Keysborough, with their cars about 1.30pm (AEDT) today, police said.
